The little town of Deutschlandsberg (372m/1,221ft; pop. 7,600) is dominated by a castle (Burg Landsberg; 517m/1696ft), which houses a museum of folk and early history (including Roman finds). Deutschlandsberg lies on what is known as the Schilcherstrasse, a road 50km/30mi long passing through vine-growing country, from Ligist in the north via Stainz (on a nearby hill stands a former Augustinian monastery) to Eibiswald near the Yugoslavian frontier.
Deutschlandsberg is a good base for the fine walking and skiing (modern lifts) area of the Koralpe (Grosser Speik- Kogel, 2,141m/7,025ft) to the west of the town.
5km/3mi south of Deutschlandsberg stands Schloss Hollenegg, with 16th C. fortified towers on its northwestern and southeastern corners. The much older northeast tower formed part of the 14th C. town wall. The Schloss boasts sumptuous state apartments with frescos, Roccoco stuccoed ceilings and a Late Baroque winged altar removed from the castle chapel at Riegersburg. East of Schloss Hollenegg lies the village of Kitzeck.
