As a boat sailing the Danube moves beyond Mauthausen, on the right, the Habsburg Schloss Wallsee and, at the mouth of the Strudengau, the little market town of Ardagger (275m/903ft) come into view. Nearby can be found the Rural Museum (Bauernmuseum), with several thousand exhibits depicting rural life in the past, and the Army Museum (Wehrmachtsmuseum) displaying weapons, uniforms and vehicles from the period 1918-45.
2.5km/1.5mi southeast of Ardagger stands Ardagger Abbey, originally a college of secular canons (1049- 1784); worth seeing is its Late Romanesque pillared basilican church with Late Gothic, Baroque and Neo-Classical furnishings. Particularly beautiful is the "St Margaret Window" (c. 1240) in the east choir, portraying the story of St Margaret, who refused to bow down to idols, was tortured and finally taken up to Heaven.
