The attractive town of Wangaratta (pop. 16,600) is situated on the Ovens River in a fertile region producing wool, wheat, tobacco and hops.
Within the town are large areas of parkland and lakes. Features of interest are the Aviation Museum, the homestead of Bontharambo (1858) and the grave of the bushranger Daniel Morgan.
Wodonga (pop. 27,500) almost merged with Albury in the neighboring state of New South Wales. Thanks to its situation on the Murray, close to Lake Hume, it is a popular holiday center.
The region was explored in the 1820s by Hume and Hovell. Later in the century, before the formation of the Commonwealth of Australia, Wodonga had the largest cattle market on the continent, but after duties were imposed on cattle from New South Wales the market closed down.
Wodonga has numerous fine 19th C. buildings.
Within easy reach are Beechworth, Rutherglen and the mountain valleys of northern Victoria.
Address: Gateway Visitor Information Centre, Lincoln Causeway, Wodonga, VIC 3690, Australia
Yackandandah was formerly a supply center for the goldfields in northeastern Victoria which were discovered in 1852. It is now famed for its plantations of strawberries and has preserved a number of fine old buildings.
