Tom Price (pop. 3540) is an iron-mining town in the interior of the Pilbara region. It is the highest town in Australia, situated at an altitude of 747m.
The huge deposit of iron ore here was discovered in 1962 and named after the managing director of the American steel corporation who had arranged for prospecting to be carried out in this area. This was the beginning of the Hamersley Iron Project, and within a very short time the multi-national mining company had established the town of Tom Price and the port of Dampier and built a railroad between the two. The town itself has no features of particular interest, consisting mainly of rows of uniform prefabricated houses, a few supermarkets and one or two parks.
