Queenscliff Attractions
Queenscliff (pop. 3740), originally a fishing village, is now an elegant summer resort.
A number of handsome old hotels (Vuegrand, Royal, Ozone, Queenscliff) bear witness to past grandeur. Beside the post office in Hesse Street is a historical museum. Fort Queenscliff, with a black lighthouse of 1862, was built in 1882, at a time when a Russian attack was feared, to protect the entrance of Port Phillip Bay. The fort is now occupied by the Australian Military College. Below the lighthouse is Buckley's Cave, in which William Buckley, an escaped convict, lived for many years among the Aborigines.
