In 1837 Port Adelaide was an area of marshland which became known, not without reason, as Port Misery. Gradually, however, it developed into a busy port with a considerable freight-handling capacity. A number of imposing 19th C buildings bear witness to its early prosperity - the Customs House (1879), the Courthouse, the Police Station (1861) and a number of historic warehouses, banks and hotels.
The South Australian Maritime Museum (119 Lipson Street) has an interesting collection of material on ships and the sea, including a lighthouse and a number of ships.
Nearby, in the former Port Dock Station, is the Railway Museum with a veteran train that runs at certain times.
