Orbost (pop. 2500) lies on the Snowy River, surrounded by the spectacular coastal and mountain scenery of East Gippsland. Its economy is based on timber working, dairy farming and vegetable growing. It has an interesting historical museum.
The Bonang Highway runs north from Orbost through the mountains to Delegate and Bombala in New South Wales (164km).
14km southeast, at the mouth of the Snowy River, is Marlo, from which it is 33km along the coast to Conran, with fine views of coastal scenery and the sea.
57km east on the Princes Highway via Cabbage Tree is the fishing village of Bemm River, on Sydenham Inlet (water sports).
45km east of Orbost, just off the Princes Highway, is the Bemm River Rainforest Walk, a trail through eucalyptus forest and gullies with dense rain forest which was laid out by the road authorities in co-operation with the army.
