Mildura Attractions

Mildura (pop. 20,770) was developed along with the irrigation of the area initiated towards the end of the 19th C by the Chaffey brothers, two Canadian-born irrigation experts. After a period of economic depression in the early 20th C. Mildura recovered after the First World War, when ex-soldiers were resettled in the town. The public relations industry has devised the name 'Sunraysia' for this area, where the sun shines almost all the time. The mild, sunny winters and beautiful situation on the banks of the Murray have made Mildura and its neighboring towns popular holiday destinations, attracting over half a million visitors annually to this sunny side of Victoria.

The great days of shipping traffic on the Murray are recalled by the paddle-steamer cruises on the Murray and the Darling, departing from Mildura Wharf, which are now a great tourist attraction. House boats can also be hired.

The town has an attractive main street, 12km long, with a broad strip of flowerbeds, grass and trees in the middle. The former home of the Chaffey brothers is now a museum.
