Maldon Attractions
The area round Maldon (pop. 1250) attracted over 20,000 prospectors during the gold rush. Maldon itself has been declared by the National Trust the 'First Notable Town' in Victoria in virtue of its well-preserved ensemble of 19th C. buildings and many old European trees. Maldon draws many visitors, particularly when the wild flowers are in bloom.
Among Maldon's well restored 19th C. buildings are the hospital, the post office, two churches, the courthouse (now a museum), Dabb's general store, a number of restaurants and tearooms and a motel. The deep gold mines on Mount Tarrangower were among the richest in the country. Nearby is a cemetery with the graves of Chinese prospectors.
10km northwest is Cairn Curran Lake (water sports, picnic spots). The whole of the surrounding area is of interest for its variety of rock formations.
