Kyneton Attractions

Kyneton (pop. 4900) flourished in gold-mining days as a supply center for the goldfields and as a staging post on the way there.

The old part of the town is well preserved, with many fine bluestone buildings (churches, police station, grain mill). The Historical Centre Collection is housed in a two-story building of 1855, formerly a bank. The bluestone Hospital has decorative verandah railings. The Botanic Gardens contain many fine old trees.

The Hanging Rock, a massive volcanic rock formation at Woodend (15km south), was made famous by the book (by Joan Lindsay) and film Picnic at Hanging Rock. There are races here on New Year's Day.

10km further southeast is Macedon (pop. 1140), which has a number of handsome 19th C. houses with beautiful gardens, dating from the time when Macedon was a fashionable summer resort for the citizens of Melbourne. From the summit of Mount Macedon (1013m), on which there is a memorial cross commemorating those who died in the first world war, there is a fine view over the Gisborne Plains.
