Kuranda Attractions

Exploring the rainforest by taking the Kuranda Scenic Railway is a unique experience. For the journey through the mountains the Scenic Railway (initial construction of which commenced in 1881; numerous bridges and tunnels) is recommended, parts of which run near the Barron Gorge with its roaring waterfalls. The journey ends in the little station at Kuranda which is almost hidden by tropical plants and palms.

Exploring the rainforest by taking the Skyrail Rainforest Cableway, the longest of its kind in the world, is a unique experience.

Walks can be arranged on request from Kuranda to the wildly romantic Barron Falls National Park. Tjapukai Aboriginal Cultural Park by the Caravonic Lakes near Smithfield is well worth a visit. It provides an excellent insight into Aboriginal culture, and in the Dance Theatre native dance performances are given from time to time.

Large numbers of rare butterflies can be seen flying around in the Butterfly Sanctuary.
There are several local rainforest species, including the electric blue Ulysses and the majestic fluoro green Cairns Birdwing.

In Birdworld many species of birds from the tropical rainforest can be seen.
Visitors can hand feed some of the birds or watch them fly freely throughout the habitat.

Davies Creek National Park features the Davies Creek Waterfall, together with huge blocks of granite, eucalyptus groves and grassland with termite mounds.

Kuranda's main attraction is its colorful local market.
Displays include souvenirs, local arts and crafts, food and native wildlife.
