Heron Island Attractions

Heron Island lies in the Great Barrier Reef and it is one of the finest diving grounds in the world, easily accessible from Gladstone by helicopter or boat.

This tiny coral island, with an area of only 42 ha, lies on the outer reef, surrounded by the huge Witari Reef. It is a favorite haunt of underwater photographers, with an extraordinary concentration of reef life, with over 800 species of coral and 1150 species of fish. Among them are two giant moray eels known as Harry and Fang who have no fear of man and approach visitors to beg for food.

In addition to its fascinating underwater world the island is also frequented by large numbers of birds and by turtles, which lay their eggs here between October and February. The young hatch out between December and May. Visitors can watch the young emerging but must not interfere with them (conducted tours are on offer).

On the island is a Marine Biological Research Station run by the University of Queensland which carries on research on the reefs and islands. Visitors can see round the station.

Other attractions are guided reef walks, fishing trips, diving excursions, diving instruction and cruises in glass-bottomed boats.
