Great Keppel Island Attractions

Great Keppel Island (area 14 sq.km) is the largest of the 18 islands off Keppel Bay, none of them more than 20km from the Capricornia coast. The other islands, lacking drinking water, have little in the way of facilities for visitors.

The hills on Great Keppel rise to heights of up to 175m. The island can be reached by boat from Rosslyn Bay (north of Rockhampton) or from Yeppoon, to the south. It is possible also to fly from Rockhampton.

On Great Keppel Island is a large resort complex run by Australian Airlines. It is designed mainly for young people, with a wide range of entertainments. There are also a youth hostel and a campsite, and facilities for a variety of sports (diving, snorkeling, riding, hang-gliding), beaches of fine sand and walking trails. The island is popular with families and with day trippers.

Emu Park, Australia
(Near Yeppoon)
Emu Park (pop. 1530) is an attractive little holiday resort on Keppel Bay. Thanks to the offshore islands, particularly Great Keppel Island, it has sheltered beaches.

On a headland overlooking the bay is the Singing Ship, a monument to Captain Cook in the form of a sailing ship, with hidden pipes which create musical sounds when the wind is blowing. In 1770 Joseph Banks, the botanist with Cook's expedition, studied the plants in Keppel Bay.
