Dampier Attractions

Dampier (pop. 2200) was founded in 1965, the first of the iron ore terminals in the Pilbara region established by the mining companies to ship ore from the Tom Price and Paraburdoo fields. The deep-water harbor loads up to 400 million tons of ore a year. The salt lakes near the port yield 2.5 million tons of salt annually, and mounds of salt are a common feature of the landscape.

The ore-loading installations of the Hamersley Iron Company can be visited by appointment.
