Beaconsfield Attractions
Beaconsfield (pop. 1100), lying to the west of the river Tamar, was founded early in the colonial period and was originally known as Cabbage Tree Hill. After the discovery of rich deposits of gold in 1877 it grew rapidly to become the third largest town in Tasmania, but in 1914 the mine was closed down because of flooding. There are now plans to reopen it.
A notable feature of the town is Holy Trinity Church, with decorative gables and a handsome tower. North of the town, on the road from Kelso to Greens Beach, is a monument marking the site of the early settlement of York Town (1804). To the southeast of Beaconsfield is the modern Batman Bridge spanning the Tamar.

Grubb Shaft Gold and Heritage Museum
The Grubb Shaft Museum, housed in one of the brick pithead buildings of 1904, contains the old steam-driven winding gear and an exhibition on gold mining. It is planned to restore the old pump house.

Beauty Point
Beauty Point (pop. 1000, good accommodation) is the oldest deep-water harbor in the area. From here gold found in the area was shipped. Today Beauty Point is a haunt for sport fishers and yacht owners. In the Australian Maritime College the cadets of the Australian navy are trained. Nearby is the popular Sandy Beach and resorts like Kelso and Green Beach (camping park) on the mouth of the Tamar River.
Opposite Beauty Point is the deep-water harbor of Bell Bay.
