Teufen
Teufen (alt. 837 m/2746ft; pop. 5,500) a favorite residential town a few kilometers from St Gallen, is situated on the southern slopes of the Fröhlichsegg (1,003 m/3,291ft; 20minutes to top; restaurant). In the handsome square stands an interesting church built in 1778 by the family of a local builder, Hans Ulrich Grubenmann. Domestic industry (embroidery, weaving) can be seen in the town.

5km/3mi northeast of Teufen the health resort of Speicher (alt. 926 m/ 3,038ft; pop. 3,350), is an idyllic village, to the north of which is the Vögelinsegg (959 m/3,146ft). Here stands a monument commemorating the Appenzellers' victory over the Abbot of St Gallen in 1403 and there are extensive views of the Lake Constance area.
