Athens - Old Parliament (National Historical Museum) Voulí

The Old Parliament (Voulí), which now houses the very fine collections of the National Historical Museum, was built in 1858-74 to the design of a French architect, Boulanger.

In front of its stands an equestrian statue of Theódoros Kolokotrónis, one of the heroes of the fight for Greek independence.

Hall of Honor

The entrance hall of the National Historical Museum leads into a narrow Hall of Honor, with busts of King Otto and George I and busts and portraits of prominent figures in the fight for independence, as well as those of politicians (e.g. Ypsilántis, Miaoúlis, Kanáris, Kolokotrónis and a heroine of the struggle for independence, Bubulína). From this hall three doorways give access to the old Parliamentary chamber, in Neo-Classical style.

Room I (Weapons)

Room I of the museum houses weapons, medals, paintings and other objects from the Byzantine period.

Room II

Room II of the museum houses mementos from the period of Turkish rule, including documents belonging to the secret society known as Philiki Etairia.

Room III (Heroes of the 1821 Revolution)

Room III of the museum contains reminiscences of the heroes of the 1821 Revolution.

Room IV (Painting)

Room IV of the museum contains battle paintings by P. Zographos, painted on instructions from the famous General Makryiannis.

Room V (Memorabilia)

Room V of the museum contains memorabilia belonging to the patriarch Gregorios V and Lord Byron, as well as the urn containing the ashes of Paul Bonaparte, a nephew of Napoleon.

Room VI (Portrait)

Room VI of the museum contains portraits of heroes and battle paintings from the period of the struggle for freedom from the Turks.

Rooms VII & VIII (Documents)

Rooms VII and VIII of the museum contain documents from the time of Kapodistrias, King Otto I and King George I.
