2004 Olympic Games, Athens

The 2004 Olympic Games were held in Athens, from August 13-29th, 2004. The Paralympic Games were held September 17-28th, 2004.
In preparation for the games and to improve the image of the city, Athens set out to transform itself through what planners called "The Olympic Look of Athens". Included in this is the Catch the Light program with 7 walking routes consisting of various themes which have been laid out throughout the city and at selected Olympic celebration sites.

Olympic Sports Complex

Some years ago a large sports center was built north of Athens, and the 1991 Mediterranean Games were held there. Athens also had high hopes of being chosen as the venue for the 1996 Olympic Games, but lost out to Atlanta in Georgia, USA. An application was also submitted to host the Games in the year 2000.
Athens won the bid to host the 2004 Olympic games which was held there in August of 2004.

Marathon

This is a recreation of the original Marathon-to-Athens route run by Pheidippidis in 490 B.C., which began the modern day marathon run.
The annual marathon is held in early November. It is open to both sexes and all ages and the official race distance is 42.2km. The starting line is in the village of Marathon, northeast of Athens and the finish line is at the Olympic stadium in the heart of Athens.

Olympic Stadium - Spartathlon

The Spartathlon annual marathon is held in late September. The international race begins in Olympic stadium in the heart of Athens and ends in Sparta.
