Yad Mordekhay Description
10km/6mi south of Ashqelon is the kibbutz of Yad Mordekhay, which was founded in 1943 and named after the leader of the rising in the Warsaw ghetto. In 1948, during the War of Independence, the members of the kibbutz held up the advance of the Egyptian army for five days, allowing the Israeli forces to regroup in Tel Aviv. There are a reproduction of the battle site and a museum commemorating the resistance in the Warsaw ghetto.
