Ashqelon - Roman Sarcophagi

In the Afridar district of Ashqelon, diagonally opposite the tourist information office, under a protective roof, are two magnificent Roman sarcophagi discovered here during site works in 1972. One has reliefs of fighting scenes, the other the rape of Persephone. On the lids are two reclining figures, the heads of which are unfinished - evidently awaiting purchase and completion in the likeness of the person to be buried.
