Arlon - Musée Luxembourgeois

Leaving the Place Léopold by the Rue des Faubourgs and turning left into the Rue des Martyrs leads us to Arlon's exceptionally interesting Musée Luxembourgeois, three rooms of which are taken up by a collection of Roman tombstones and sarcophagi unique in Belgium.
Particularly noteworthy among the sculptures are a relief showing travelers in the course of their journey (AD 170-80), statues of a divine horseman and various other gods, a satyr-decorated stele, and a large fragment found only recently, in 1980, carved with scenes from ancient mythology.

There is much to see apart from the Roman finds. One room concentrates on the Merovingian period with a collection of weapons, Damascene work, glass and items of everyday use.
Folk art is also well represented, with displays of furniture and domestic items such as kitchen utensils and jewelry. Exhibits include some from the Luxembourg Ardennes and range in date from the Middle Ages to the recent past.
Among the museum's many examples of religious art the most notable is the Fisecne retable, made in Antwerp in the 16th C.
