Although they are named for the Mexican Toltec Indians, these prehistoric earthworks were probably built by American Indians. This unique mound complex was the cultural center of a group of Native Americans that archeologists call the Plum Bayou people, who inhabited the area from A.D. 650 to 1050. Three mounds remain, where 18 once stood, surrounded by an earthen embankment eight to ten feet in height, a portion of which is still visible today. There is a 3/4 mi self-guiding tour through the site and the visitor center provides interpretive exhibits.
