Ganado is named after Ganado Mucho, one of the great Navajo chiefs. The town of Ganado has been a traditional meeting center for the Pueblo Colorado Valley. Native Americans, especially the Navajo and Anasazi, have come to the area as it has been a favorite gathering place for centuries.
At Ganado, 50mi/80km west of Gallup, is the Hubbell Trading Post, established by John Lorenzo Hubbell in the late 1870s. The present establishment, which dates from 1885, has an interesting interior and displays an ethnological collection.
Visitors to the Hubbell Trading Post can step back in time to catch a glimpse of life on the original homestead with the trading post and family home available.
