The town of Douglas is named for Dr James Douglas, president of the Phelps Dodge Company, when it set up this new town as a copper smelting site in 1900. Douglas is just across the border from the Mexican town of Agua Prieta.
The opulent Gadsden Hotel in downtown Douglas was built in 1907, and then rebuilt in 1928. Notable features of the Gadsden Hotel are the white Italian marble staircase, marble columns, the authentic Tiffany stained glass mural that covers a whole wall and the stained glass skylights that run the full length of the lobby.
