Coconino National Forest - Lava River Cave
Lava River Cave was created 700,000 years ago by a volcanic eruption that created this lava tube. The top, sides and bottom cooled and solidified first, while insides of the lava river continued to flow emptying out the present cave.
Features that can be seen while touring the cave include lava flow ripples, cooling cracks and lavasicles, which are small icicle-like formations.
