The town of Clarkdale is just northwest of Cottonwood, in the Verde Valley on U.S. 89A. Clarkdale was founded in 1912, and was a bustling industrial town until its smelter was shut down in 1952.
Clarkdale's Clark Memorial Clubhouse shows the history of the town and its founder, Senator William Andrews Clark (1839-1925). Community theater is often performed in the Clark Memorial Clubhouse.

Tuzigoot National Monument in Clarkdale gets its name from the Apache word for "crooked water". This ancient village was inhabited by Sinagua Indians between AD 1125 and 1400. The pueblo consisted of 110 rooms with some structures having two or three floors.
The Sinagua Indians were an agricultural tribe who traded with others for hundreds of miles.

The Verde Canyon Railroad is based in Clarkdale offering a 20-mile round trip journey. Passengers enjoy a four-hour scenic train ride through the surrounding wilderness areas and the Verde River. Sights include Indian ruins, natural scenery as well as local flora and fauna.
