Situation and topography
Arizona (from the Indian arizonac, "land of the little rivers") lies in the southwestern United States, bounded on the south by Mexico. It consists of two different geological and morphological regions within the intermontane zone of the Cordilleras. Northern Arizona forms part of the Colorado Plateau, with the Grand Canyon, hewn from the rock to depths of up to 6,600ft/2,000m. The plateau, traversed by innumerable faults and flexures, falls away to the south and west in a series of steep scarps. In this area are the highest mountains in the state, rising to 12,668ft/3,861m
