Spetsai - Island Circuit

The circuit of the island (12km/7.5mi) is a pleasant day's walk, or it can be done in a horse-drawn carriage. From Spétses the route runs southeast by way of the monastery of Áyios Nikólaos (19th C.) to Ayía Marína, where there are scanty traces of a prehistoric settlement.
Off Cape Bísti, at the southeast end of the island, lies the islet of Spetsipoúla, which is owned by the shipowner Stavros Niarchos.
The road goes west to Cape Kouzouna, where there are remains of an early Christian basilica (fifth C.), and then turns north.
In the bay of Áyii Anáryiri (good bathing) is the Bekiri Cave, with remains of rock-cut sculpture. From here it is possible to return direct to Spétses, or alternatively to continue round the island by way of Ayía Paraskeví (pilgrimage church) to Breloú, in a wooded region. Then either by way of the highest point on the island, Mt Profítis Ilías (244m/801ft), and the monastery of Áyii Pántes to Ayía Marína, or on the beautiful coast road back to Spétses.
