Arezzo - San Domenico

North of the cathedral in Arezzo, in Piazza San Doménico, is the Church of San Doménico, a plain aisleless structure which is one of the most impressive of the 13th century churches of the Mendicant Orders. It was founded in 1275 by the Tarlati family, and according to Vasari was designed by Nicola Pisano. It is notable for its sober unornamented facade.

The bell-cote of the original campanile contains two 14th century bells. The church has fine 14th and 15th century frescoes by Aretine painters ("The Virgin with SS John, Dominic and Nicholas" by Parri di Spinello; "SS Philip and James" by Spinello Aretino). On the right-hand side of the nave is a Gothic tabernacle known as the Altare Dragondelli (c. 1350), by Giovanni di Francesco. On the high altar is a "Crucifixion" by Cimabue (between 1260 and 1270).
