Ardagger Abbey Description
2.5km/1.5mi southeast of Ardagger stands Ardagger Abbey, originally a college of secular canons (1049- 1784); worth seeing is its Late Romanesque pillared basilican church with Late Gothic, Baroque and Neo-Classical furnishings. Particularly beautiful is the "St Margaret Window" (c. 1240) in the east choir, portraying the story of St Margaret, who refused to bow down to idols, was tortured and finally taken up to Heaven.
