Breuil (Cervinia) & the Matterhorn

The road continues through a gorge, just before which a footpath (10minutes' walk) goes off to the Gouffre des Busserailles (waterfall; admission fee), 104m/114yd long and 35m/116ft deep, and reaches Breuil or Cervinia (2,006m/6,620ft), a winter sports resort which is also popular in summer (bobsleigh run 1,540m/5,082ft long to the Lac Bleu) with fantastic scenery: to the north the mighty peak of the Matterhorn (Monte Cervino; 4,478m/14,777ft; the climb with guide takes 12 hours), to the west the rock wall of the Grandes Murailles (3,872m/12,778ft). From Breuil there is a cableway east to the Plan Maison (2,557m/8,438ft) and from there northeast to the Furggen ridge (3,488m/11,510ft) or alternatively east, either directly or via Cime Bianche (2,823m/9,316ft), to the Plateau Rosà (3,480m/11,484ft). 1km/0.75mi north of the Plateau Rosà is the Theodul pass (3,322m/10,963ft), from which there are fine views, extending also into the Zermatt valley.
This purpose-built Italian resort offers skiers the opportunity to ski Zermatt without paying Swiss prices. Il Cervino is the Italian name for the Matterhorn and Cervinia is the village at its base where Mussolini proposed a ski resort be built. A hodge podge of architectural styles, Cervinia offers beginners and intermediates wide open slopes with good uncomplicated cruising. If you plan to ski to Zermatt from Plateau Rosa (now served from Cervinia by a 140-passenger cable car), be sure to buy special lift tickets for use on the Swiss side first or you'll be paying more for a lift ticket on the other side to get back to Italy. The Swiss side offers steeper terrain and narrower trails for advanced intermediates and experts.
