About 8km/5mi beyond Karaçay a poor road turns off towards the Musa Dagi, leading after 11km/7mi to a 13th century Crusader church. After the Armenian pogroms which followed the First World War the Armenian minority took refuge in the Musa Dagi. The story of their suffering is told by Franz Werfel in his historical novel "The Forty Days of Musa Dagi". On the 1,281m/4,202ft high summit is a basilica dedicated to Saint Simeon Stylite the Younger who, inspired by the example of an older namesake (Qaalat Siman/St Simeon in Syria) reputedly spent his life perched on top of a tall column erected on the spot now occupied by the church.
