Description
Studies initiated under the Ankara Master Plan in 1986 produced a scheme for a 76km metro and light rail system to be in full operation by 2015.

The initial 14.6 km route with 12 stations will link Kizilay in the city center with new residential areas at Batikent in the west, running along Ataturk Boulevard. The line will be fully segregated and capable of handling 40,000 passengers/h in each direction.

Opening is scheduled for 1997.

An 8.5km light rail route known as Ankaray is also under construction as part of the metro project. There will be 11 stations, that at Kizilay in the city center providing interchange with the metro.
