Susten pass

8.5km/5miles from Färnigen, at Gorezmettlen, Susten road crosses the stream flowing down the Kleinalp valley from the Kleiner Spannort and then climbs higher up the slopes of the Meiental, now wild and desolate, with a view of the summit of the pass and the Sustenhorn, with the Rüttifirn and Kalchtalfirn. The Sustenstübli inn is passed on the right of the road. Beyond this, to the left, there is a magnificent panorama, looking backwards down the valley; ahead to the left, is the summit of the pass, from which the jagged crest of the Fünffingerstöcke extends to the right towards the Wendenhorn (3,023 m/9,918ft) and Grassen (2,946 m/9,666ft). Then follow two bends and a short tunnel leading up to the Susten pass (2,259 m/7,412ft), under which the road passes in a tunnel 325 m/1,066ft long (alt. 2,224 m/7,297ft). Just beyond the far end of the tunnel are a large parking place and a small lake, from which there is a rewarding climb (five minutes) to the summit of the pass (restaurant), the boundary between the cantons of Uri and Berne, with views of the imposing chain of mountains north of the Meiental (highest point Titlis, 3,239 m/10,627ft), the group formed by the Gewichtenhorn (3,425 m/11,327ft) and the Tierberge (3,444 m/11,300ft) rearing up above the Stein glacier, the Himmelrank gorge and, in the background, the tunnels on the Susten road and the Gadmerfluh.
