Description
The Susten road from Innertkirchen to the Grimsel goes gradually uphill in the wooded and steadily narrower Oberhaslital above the right bank of the Aare, with beautiful vistas of the mountains ahead. In another 2.5km/ 2mi, beyond the huts on the Aussere Urweid (716 m/2,349ft), a narrow stretch of road above the gorge-like valley bears left around a wall of rock and passes through the short Zuben tunnel, under a waterfall, into the Innere Urweid (760 m/2,494ft: inn). 1km/0.6mi farther on the road runs through another short tunnel in a rocky spur of the Tönende Fluh, after which the valley opens out a little. At the hamlet of Boden (876 m/2,874ft) the road crosses the river and winds its way up the wooded mountainside, with four hairpin bends, to Guttanen (1,060 m/3,478ft), the last village in the Oberhaslital, under the precipitous Ritzlihorn (3,282 m/10,768ft), which every year sends its dreaded avalanches tumbling down into the Spreitlaui valley. The crystal museum at Wirzen in Guttanen has examples of crystals from the Hasli valley and other regions of Switzerland.
