The port of Anchorage (pop. 260,000) lies at the head of Cook Inlet, surrounded by the Chugach Mountains. It is Alaska's largest town, its commercial and economic centre and its most important traffic hub (intercontinental air services; the world's largest seaplane base). Among places of interest are the Anchorage Museum of History and Art and
Earthquake Park, which commemorates the devastating 1964 earthquake. Anchorage appeals to visitors as a good base for excursions by air or boat and for the scenic attractions of its immediate surroundings. Within easy reach of the town are Mount Alyeska Ski Resort, which offers skiing throughout the year, the magnificent Portage Glacier (50 mi. south-east) and the Kenai Peninsula. Chugach National Forest and Chugach State Park offer unspoiled natural landscapes.
