Amsterdam - Zuiderkerk Tower
The tower of the Zuiderkerk, which is almost 80 m/262ft. high, is among the finest in Amsterdam. The lower section, which shows a clear list to the southwest of more than a meter, is brick, then comes a section in sandstone, topped finally by a wooden pinnacle covered with lead. The carillon in the octagonal spire is the work of the Hemony brothers. It has been renovated several times and consists of 47 bells, the largest weighing 3300 kg/7,277 lbs, ranging over four octaves. There used to be a cemetery around the Zuiderkerk. One of the two elaborately decorated gateways that provided the entrances to the churchyard has been rebuilt and gives onto the Sint Antoniesbreestraat.
