Amsterdam - Tropical Museum

(Local Name: Tropenmuseum) The Tropical Museum, with its displays of art and everyday objects from tropical and sub-tropical areas, is part of the Royal Tropical Institute. Here you can wander round a bazaar, look inside the houses of the Far East and spot the western Coca Cola bottle in the oriental shop. The Museum also hosts regular concerts of Eastern or Asian music and has a large library. The original purpose of the Royal Tropical Institute, successor to the "Koloniaal Instituut", was to provide information about the Dutch colonies (Surinam, Indonesia and the Dutch Antilles). Nowadays its prime concern is the problems of the Third World.
