Description
(Local Name: Amsterdamse Bos) The Amsterdam wood was created in 1934 during the Depression as the result of a "job-creation scheme" which was to guarantee work for 1,000 men for five years. In the 900 ha (over 2,000 acres) area on the southwest edge of the city can be found about 150 species of trees from all parts of the world, in addition to shrubs and trees native to the Netherlands. Animal life is just as varied; more than 200 species of birds find their home here.

The wood is very popular with the people of Amsterdam and offers many sporting facilities, including riding, walking, cycling, jogging, fishing, swimming, rowing and sailing as well as restaurants and cafes. Anyone wishing to stay longer here can make use of the camp site.
