This ancient Macedonian city, 60km/37mi west of Kavála near the mouth of the river Strymon, was a major Greek stronghold and in Roman times an important staging-point on the Via Egnatia, the great highway running from the Adriatic to Constantinople.
The site extends out into the sea. Greek excavations have revealed sections of the town walls,
and in 1972 brought to light a building which has been identified as a gymnasium. The most striking monument is a majestic stone lion of the Hellenistic period which stands outside the ancient city, immediately west of the bridge over the Strymon.
