Alvin (pop. 20,000) is located between Houston and Galveston. The town's main industry developed as a result of the discovery of oil in the 1930's. Alvin is also known for being the home town of baseball pitcher Nolan Ryan.

and canoeing. Also of interest are the Alvin Antique Center & Marketplace, as well as the Gulf Coast Speedway.
Alvin is also known as "The Babe on the Bayou".
