Alturas - Modoc National Wildlife Refuge

Modoc National Wildlife Refuge is 7021 acres of critical open water and wetlands habitat forming an oasis for wildlife in the high desert.

Modoc is one of more than 540 National Wildlife Refuges forming a network of federal lands dedicated primarily for wildlife and habitat.

The refuge is a haven for migrating birds in the Pacific Flyway and a mecca for birdwatchers. Depending on the season, waterfowl, shorebirds, songbirds and birds of prey stop here to rest. Other species can be viewed year round. A variety of mammals from bats to badgers,

reptiles, amphibians and fish call Modoc NWR home.

Morning and early evening are the best times to see wildlife. Binoculars and a camera are essentials as you quietly drive the auto tour route, your car acts as a viewing blind. The route may be also enjoyed by foot or bicycle. The route is approximately 3 miles in length.
