Altötting - Holy Chapel

The Holy Chapel in Altötting's Kapellplatz was originally an octagonal structure built in Carolingian times, to which a nave was added in the late 15th C. Housed in a silver tabernacle of 1645 is the famous carved wooden image of Our Lady of Altötting, a black Madonna dating from around 1300. Round it, in silver urns, are the hearts of 21 Bavarian rulers and of Tilly, the celebrated Imperial general of the Thirty Years War. In the ambulatory are numerous ex-votos.
