Altenmarkt im Pongau (850m/2,789ft; pop. 2,400) is of Roman origin and the oldest place in the Enns valley. The parish church contains a 14th C. image of the Virgin.

The town of Altenmarkt im Pongau is noted for alpine and nordic skiing. It has been the site of numerous World Cups, as recently as 2006, and several national championships.
