Alingsås has preserved its small-town charm. It is famed for its attractive timber houses and its numerous inviting cafes (24 as of 2006) and cake-shops. In the market square can be seen a bust of Jonas Alströmer (1685-1761). Here too are the old Arsenal (1631), now a museum, and the Storken craft center, with a potter's workshop, a weaving room, a carpenter's shop, a knitwear workshop and a cafe. In the park of Nolhaga Castle Alstrømer grew potatoes and tobacco for the first time in Sweden.
