Ewaninga Rock Carvings Conservation Reserve
6ha.
This small reserve in a red sandy plain was established mainly to protect the strange prehistoric carvings on a group of sandstone outcrops. They show a great variety of symbols and patterns - circles, spirals, snakes, animal tracks. The origin and significance of the carvings are unknown: they mean nothing even to the local Aranda tribes. The carvings are badly weathered, and are best seen and photographed in the slanting light of early morning or late afternoon.
At Ooraminna (3km south of Ewaninga, road to east; all-terrain vehicles only) are rock paintings of a later period. Ewaninga is at the end of the stretch of the old Ghan railroad line on which historic trains are run as a tourist attraction.
