Alcañiz - Castillo de los Calatravos

The origins of the Castillo de los Calatravos, on Pui Pinos, go back to 1179. The only features that have survived from that period are the cloister and the chapel, over which towers the keep. In the chapel is the tomb (by Damián Forment, 1537) of Juan de Lanuza, Viceroy of Aragon. The ground floor of the keep (in which is the entrance to the chapel) and the great hall have 14th century wall paintings, mostly depicting scenes of chivalry. The keep was considerably altered in the 18th century, and the southern half is now occupied by the Palacio de los Comendadores, flanked by twin towers, with a gallery of typically Aragonese type. The palace now houses a parador.
