Description
In the Piazza 4 Novembre in Álcamo stands the Chiesa Matrice, consecrated to Santa Maria Assunta; the only things which have survived from the earlier building on the site are the side door (dated 1499) and the bell-tower with its matching pair of windows. The present building, a three-aisled vaulted basilica with columns and a crossing cupola, was one of the last works of Angelo Italia (1699). The facade dates from the 18th century. Inside there is the altar retable by Antonello Gagini (1519) and a cyclo of frescoes by the Fleming Guglielmo (Willelm) Borremans from 1735-37.
