Sund - Kastelholm Castle

23km/14mi northeast of Mariehamn by way of Jomala (church with Romanesque frescoes) is the 14th century stronghold of Kastelholm, which until 1634 was the residence of the governor of Åland. In the mid-18th century it was badly damaged by fire. One wing which survived the fire now houses the Åland Museum of Cultural History. A few kilometers north of Kastelholm is the stone-built church of Sund (13th century), with notable sculptural decoration.
