21km/13mi northeast of Mariehamn is the red granite church of Hammarland, which may date from the 12th century. In nearby Eckerö, housed in an old post office (designed by C.L. Engel), is a Postal Museum.
The Åland Hunting & Fishing Museum shows the historical importance of hunting, fishing and shooting, also the living conditions of fishermen's families in bygone times.
The Åland Fire Brigade Museum displays old fire-engines and fire-fighting equipment including several authentic red engines. There are fire brigades collected by volunteers.
